CROSS-MEDIA BRANDING #1 - Definitions TBC

From the assessment criteria:

...

What is a brand?
Wiki definitions:
brand is a name, term, design, symbol, or other feature that distinguishes an organization or product from its rivals in the eyes of the customer.[2][3]Brands are used in businessmarketing, and advertising.
Branding is a set of marketing and communication methods that help to distinguish a company or products from competitors, aiming to create a lasting impression in the minds of customers. The key components that form a brand's toolbox include a brand’s identity, brand communication (such as by logos and trademarks), brand awarenessbrand loyalty, and various branding (brand management) strategies.[5]
ORIGINS:
The practice of branding is thought to have begun with the ancient Egyptians who were known to have engaged in livestock branding as early as 2,700 BC.[4] Branding was used to differentiate one person’s cattle from another's by means of a distinctive symbol burned into the animal’s skin with a hot branding iron. If a person would steal the animals, anyone could detect the symbol and deduce the actual owner. However, the term has been extended to mean a strategic personality for a product or company, so that ‘brand’ now suggests the values and promises that a consumer may perceive and buy into. Over time, the practice of branding objects extended to a broader range of packaging and goods offered for sale including oil, wine, cosmetics and fish sauce.
So what is meant by creating a brand throughout my media products is to give my act distinguishing features that sets them out from the crowd, gets them noticed in the cross-media promotion, brand awareness is the key term here.

This extends to things like promotional merchandise.

IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY:

EXAMPLES:
Disclosure and Gorillaz have very recognisable traits throughout their music videos,
the white lines on face and Gorillaz their animations and quirky/bizarre drawn characters.

Music historian John Harris saying about Bowie in Five Years Documentary (, 2013)
If you're, but I won't call it that because I think it's a huge disservice to what we're talking about here.
This is an example of artistic values being thrown against the commercial side of music, arthouse vs commercial.

I think Suede would also talk about themselves like that due to comments like "not being neutered by the music industry" and feeling like outsiders ("Victorian Orphans").

POSSIBLE IDEA/ARTIST #4 - Depeche Mode

This is the first Depeche Mode song I heard, years before I knew anything about them.
I heard in a trailer for the BBC crime drama Luther

PERFORMANCE

Typical Depeche Mode, Norman as lead singer as Dave Gahan.

Later in the final chorus big sounds of drums

NARRATIVE

Wanderer starting at Trier West Haus, walking, running away from someone.

Start off in black and white like in then when the Wanderer gets somewhere it changes to colour like in The Chemical Brother's Galvanize,

He meets another character, they talk. He's freaked out about them, that's when it escalates at 3'35.

Really use the moment when the music briefly stops as a moment of chock and contemplation.

After my Media teacher said filming underwater always looks good, I had the idea she might want to jump in for fun, to enjoy.

Promoting the name of the album:  "My child is an Honor Student at Badland Prep", is something I would like to do, so in the dystopian city a poster or spray of grafiti. "The Diamond Dogs are coming. No use hiding behind trees/And Halloween Jack doesn't carry a leash."

Murders are going on, butcherings by the Dogs.

Relationship with the lyrics

Drank drank, moments of cross-cutting with bottle

"I see the crowd mood", later reflected by the party group scenes. Red lighting, mood/atmosphere being danger with red connotations of blood?

...

[Hook:]
Pour up (drank), head shot (drank)
Sit down (drank), stand up (drank)
Pass out (drank), wake up (drank)
Faded (drank), faded (drank)

[Verse 1:]
Now I done grew up
Round some people living their life in bottles
Granddaddy had the golden flask
Back stroke every day in Chicago
Some people like the way it feels
Some people wanna kill their sorrows
Some people wanna fit in with the popular
That was my problem
I was in the dark room
Loud tunes, looking to make a vow soon
That I'm a get fucked up, fillin' up my cup
I see the crowd mood
Changing by the minute and the record on repeat
Took a sip, then another sip, then somebody said to me:

[Chorus:]
Nigga why you babysittin' only 2 or 3 shots?
I'm a show you how to turn it up a notch
First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you dive in it
Pool full of liquor, then you dive in it
I wave a few bottles, then I watch em all flock
All the girls wanna play Baywatch
I got a swimming pool full of liquor and they dive in it
Pool full of liquor I'm a dive in it

[Hook:]
Pour up (drank), head shot (drank)
Sit down (drank), stand up (drank)
Pass out (drank), wake up (drank)
Faded (drank), faded (drank)

[Verse 2:]
Okay, now open your mind up and listen to me, Kendrick
I'm in your conscience, if you do not hear me
Then you will be history, Kendrick
I know that you're nauseous right now
And I'm hopin' to lead you to victory, Kendrick
If I take another one down
I'm a drown in some poison abusin' my limit
I think that I'm feelin' the vibe
I see the love in her eyes, I see the feelin'
The freedom is granted as soon as the damage of vodka arrive
This how you capitalize
This is parental advice
Then apparently, I'm over influenced by what you are doin'
I thought I was doin' the most then someone said to me

[Chorus:]
Nigga why you babysittin' only 2 or 3 shots?
I'm a show you how to turn it up a notch
First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you dive in it
Pool full of liquor, then you dive in it
I wave a few bottles, then I watch em all flock
All the girls wanna play Baywatch
I got a swimming pool full of liquor and they dive in it
Pool full of liquor I'm a dive in it

[Hook:]
Pour up (drank), head shot (drank)
Sit down (drank), stand up (drank)
Pass out (drank), wake up (drank)
Faded (drank), faded (drank)

[Bridge:]
I ride, you ride, bang
One chopper, one hundred shots, bang
Hop out. Do you, bang
Two chopper, two hundred shots, bang
I ride, you ride, bang
One chopper, one hundred shots, bang
Hop out. Do you, bang
Two chopper, two hundred shots, bang

Pour up (drank), head shot (drank)
Sit down (drank), stand up (drank)
Pass out (drank), wake up (drank)
Faded (drank), faded (drank)

POSSIBLE ARTIST: Suede

I first heard this track on the Channel 4 TV show Queer As Folk, at the end of episode one. Since then it has represented a theme of the Other, a strangeness, a difference from normal society.

From the same album, there hasn't been a video done for this.

...

POSSIBLE IDEA/ARTIST #2: People Are Strange

This song by The Doors was originally released in 1967, and has been covered on multiple locations by various bands.

In 1987 it was covered for the horror comedy film The Lost Boys, with the length being extended

Johnny Hollow

This cover by Tribe Society is not available on YouTube

This one I quite liked the rough sound, and that both a male and female artist are singing, and I could have both voices be performed by the opposite gender like in the Soothe My Soul video by Depeche Mode

Guitar playing at beginning, and whistling at the end?

MV RESEARCH - Product Placement

A number of theorists called music videos an advert for a song like an advert for a product. Here are examples where the video is actually advertising another product in a different industry.

Ellie Goulding

This is an example of a music video whose main purpose is to promote clothing, as is said the description of the video.

The albums are named after the collection is described and a hyperlink for the shoes

Ellie Goulding had already released a video for this song last year

Prior to this a fan lyric video had been made and distributed by Vevo

FANTA

POSSIBLE MV INFLUENCES #25: Character in Several locations

NOTE: This was part of my original concept, so needs to be a earlier.

This is a pure narrative/narrative video with no performance elements

I like how the character in her delusional state is in several locations, and their is the same focus always in the background. Use of jump cuts. Could add a more French New Wave flare to it if I were to apply it.

My main character, the protagonist, would go through several places delusional.

POSSIBLE MV INFLUENCES #24: Lighting

In Depeche Mode's Live Session music video for Goodbye from their 2013 album

It goes from this

To this:

POSSIBLE MV INFLUENCES #23: Other characters lip-synching

- A male voice but lip-synching with a female character, I could also do this with if I choose a female artist and have it with male characters.

*Insert GIF of woman singing*

Reminds me of this video by German rapper Cro, where the whole video contains a female character singing the lyrics without Cro present, a performance/concept video without artist present Goodwin would say.

Also in this video by Arcade Fire at 3'14 a little girl in the narrative briefly sings one of the lyrics:

ORIGINAL ARTIST VID #1 - Valentine's Day

POSSIBLE POINTS OF INFLUENCE:
  • This is an example of how music videos are still released after the full album, so there is less interest in the new music and more in the visualisation, and I also want to hint in my music promo package's website and social media that there are more music videos to come, which will also be intertextually referenced in my digipak artwork

ACT: David Bowie
TRACK: Valentine's Day

ALBUM: The Next Day
YEAR: 2013
GENRE: Glam rock[1]folk rock[2]
LABEL:

  • MAIN AUDIENCE: Bowie hardcore fans, as the wave of interest garnered by the general public will have decreased as this is five months since he released the album proper

    NARRATIVE
The title and the romantic sounding sound plays to expectations that the song is about the theme of the romantic event.

    INTRO + OUTRO
There is a diegetic outro as the camera tilts down, and then as we track forward to Bowie the track begins. There is no extra sound at the end.

    TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
Opening shot is a tilting shot going down from a temple. We then cut to inside the temple and see a figure in white with the back turned. Narrative enigma is created, although the core audience and also secondary audience will guess it is the singer, as he does star in his own music videos prominently. The audio from the song then starts with the opening drum beat, called up by the raising of a long object, revealed to be a guitar, as we close in to a tilt shot going down from the head to, as it reaches medium close-up the guitar gets started to being played. The camera then turns to its left around the singer, at the side he looks slightly restrained, gasping breath and restrained, his head going down as we have come to a medium side shot.
Camera facing Bowie now fully revealed in medium longshot. His facial expression turns into a puppy-like face. Then switch back to medium close-up with Bowie looking down first after having stopped playing, then looks up when he continues playing and starts singing the lyircs. MLS to MS of playing at side again, 0’32

    BOWIE FANSITE

It’s a curse on his adopted country, a place in which the regular, random slaughter of children is considered the equivalent of some unavoidable act of nature, like a tornado. Hence the song’s title: a day meant to commemorate lovers is some grubby fanatic’s day of indiscriminate judgement.
