ARTIST VID #2 - The Drowners

POSSIBLE POINTS OF INFLUENCE
  • Looking at the camera

TRACK: The Drowners
ALBUM: Suede
YEAR: 1993
GENRE:
DIRECTOR: ..
LABEL:  Nude Records
SINGLE?: Yes, very first one

CURRENT SITUATION

  • A huge media frenzy had surrounded this band
  • This is before the band settled on their all-black look

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE OR CONCEPT?
Performance and concept mix.
The characters in the concept join in with singing.

EXTRA SOUND:
Track is exactly the same

TITLES:

No titles, of the time when there weren't any, instead they were listed on TV.

NARRATIVE ENIGMA:
We as usual don't get the full body of the performers in longshot or ELS in the first shot

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND VISUALS:
The lyric "Do You Believe In Love There" is literally represented in the mise-en-sèene through, a make-up effect.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOUND AND VISUALS:

GENRE SIGNIFIERS:
The glam rock aspects of the band are set up through the costume and dance moves, many critics picked up it was a simulacrum of a David Bowie

INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES:

The writing on "Do You Believe In Love There" could have come from Morrissey's "Marry ME" written on his chest during his live stage performances.

OTHER NARRATIVE THEORY:

The other character Brett plays is something of anti-hero maybe with his strangling at the end, morally dubious.
An equilibrium is not quite clear, does the disruption happen when we see the girl with the male figure together, or when he starts strangling her?.

BRANDING:

The classic image of the band in black hasn't been set down yet, their image is still being developed, they have not set down a permanent brand. This would still be the case for the video of their second single Metal Mickey.

REPRESENTATION:

GENDER: ... Brett's androgynous image is not as fully developped as it will be in Animal Nitrate and So Young.

ETHNICITY: All white Caucasians.

SEXUALITY: All lyrics are supposed to be sexually ambiguous as, however due the couple below it gives the apparent anchoring of a heterosexual relationship.

CLASS:
...

ABILITY/DISABILITY: ...

AUDIENCE REPRESENTED/TARGETED:
The woman fits quite neatly in with the target audience, even looking similar to the girl in a 1993 documentary:
