WEBSITE General: Charlie Puth

POSSIBLE POINTS OF INFLUENCE:
  • The splashpage ( video playing in the background)
  • Mention a support act in the touring information (choose an emerging band today that has some similarities, The Duke Spirit would quite likely be a good choice as Brett Anderson is a huge fan of them)
  • I do not want to use use white as the main background colour as has been done here.
  • Integration of social media
  • Use of social media images in the gallery, more than has been done here

LANDING PAGE
The artist's newest video, How Long, is being played, without sound. Includes multiple links to save and order the music.
A section of the video where there is bright lighting has been chosen, so to glamorise the artist. Also, he is laughing and there are elements of slow-mo, so this covers the cute factor

Part of the Links List, billed as "Photos", is less high art than Gallery, which also accounts for the content which consists of four photos, three looking amateurishly like selfies. Though this still a part of convergence, using photos taken by yourself instead of employing a photographer

EVALUATION LIST/IDEAS

POTENTIAL FORMATS

PODCAST
Not just audio, but a visual podcast

An example:

...

...

...

ILLNESS ADVERT
A Parody Advert of an Illness, Tie in own viral idea

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
A Public Service Announcement, can be a YouTube video or TV advert (convergence)

...

THE EVALUATION AREAS
EvalQ1a - CONVENTIONS
Andrew Goodwin is giving a lecture or an interview, conflict with Carol Vernallis, later bring in other theorists like Saul Austerlitz, Negus.

EvalQ1b - REPRESENTATIONS

The Representation Detective. Someone is inspecting my media texts to see if they're stereotypical, counter-typical or a mix of both.
Costume: Black Coat, Glasses, Black Hat

EvalQ2 - BRANDING

Sketch: "I've got the branding disease" or "viral disease.
Or some form of viral/branding phobia, however this could link into distribution of digipak "Doctor, I've been seeing this image on my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, and then I saw my friend had it as a poster, and another had it as vinyl, people were even turning it into leaflets, making fan art out of it, adding the Andy Warhol effect!!
I don't believe it, it just won't stop following me.
Then followed by a PSA = PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

EvalQ3a - AUDIENCES

A Recording of a YouTube comment chain, with audience members of different ages commenting on the new promo texts for Suede, including the original audience who are now in their 40s, my new primary audience who are in the age range of 15-25, some YouTubers who do not find Suede appealing as a band, either find them too avant-garde and prefer more traditional rock bands like OneRepublic, or older fans prepared to be more mainstream and listen to the Britpop bands such as Oasis, Blur + Pulp. Others might find them too tame when comparing them to Placebo or heavy metal bands.

EvalQ3b - DISTRIBUTION

MUSIC VIDEO
I could parody Update Deluxe and the American/British versions, to show what the media's reaction would be to the music video (would they care, is my act high-profile enough? Or if not could it mainly rely on the video itself, proving Dan Miller they are rising as an art form at their own right?)
Just like the presenter mentioned the intertextual references to past Sido videos, I can also mention intertextual references to both the act and other media/art forms.

THE MUSIC ITSELF

An older fan during the 90s just when CD has come through, or the Walkman. They shudder at the sign that vinyl is going to become more and more obsolete.
Then someone from the future comes back and explains it to them, and gives them hope, explains that nostalgia will create.
"Oh look", gets a news notification that Sony are opening a new vinyl factory in Japan.

A mixture of both 3a+b, Capitalism vs Creativity, Mainstream Vs Niche, Arthouse vs commercial. Have the plotting commercial entity and the contrasting artistic entity argue about how their products will be/would be more financially succesful/artisistically relevant (and therefore have different reactions from audience in terms of size, type and feelings, u+G, representation, targeting LgBT+ audiences, less represented audiences
"But that doesn't make money, look at *name some examples of flak (chomsky's propaganda model), such as the transgender video co-produced with Pornhub, Suede's Animal Nitrate banned at first from MTV
Times have changed.
Commercial Entity could be Evil German like I played in our AS prelim Adopted.

EvalQ4 - TECHNOLOGIES

A kit-preparing video, very fast
these are the new technologies ur gonna use
these are some old ones from AS
these are the problems you will very likely (e.g. waiting for god damn files to rematch, spoof waiting for godot)

This captures some of the pace, energy and style ill want to achieve

WEBSITE RESEARCH #5 - Examples To Learn Mistakes From

THE DESTRUCTORS

GENRE: Punk
TENURE:
LABEL: ...
LINK: Click here

Not enough visuals on the home page. Very basic writing presentation missing:
too small size, no bold font, only very occasionally upper-case words, too crammed together due to no line spacing.

THE WHITE STRIPES

GENRE: Indie rock
TENURE: 1997-2011
LABEL: ...
LINK: Click here.

A now disbanded act, unlike with other defunct acts such as Nirvana and David Bowie, their website hasn't been kept very well.

The font is very basic and uninterestingly non-serif, quite thin.

DISTRIBUTION - MV Marketing

Online article from XXL. Music Videos don't get the same amount of press coverage as film and TV, but do get some online coverage, which is a form of marketing as well.

Fresh off one video shoot and on to the next one, Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna recently shot the visual for their collab, “Loyalty,” off K. Dot’s latest album, Damn.Footage from the shoot has made its way to the internet, and it doesn’t reveal a whole lot about the upcoming visual. It does show some scantily clad women in a room lit by red light. They sensually move around in a group while cameras record their actions and “Loyalty” blares through the speakers.“Loyalty” is the third single of Kendrick’s platinum album, following “Humble” and “DNA.” The TDE rapper talked about working with the Bad Gal during an interview with Zane Lowe back in April. “I’ve always wanted to work with Rihanna,” he told Lowe. “I love everything about her, her artistry, how she represents women to not only be themselves but to express themselves the way she expresses herself through music and how she carries herself. I love everything about her, so I always wanted to work with her. I did the record and immediately, her name popped up. Reached out, we locked in a studio, and made it happen.”Most of Rihanna’s hip-hop collabs in the past have been nothing short of smashes, including Eminem’s “Monster,” Jay Z’s “Run This Town,” Future’s “Loveeee Song,” and T.I.’s “Live Your Life.” Basically, if you can get RiRi on a rap record, issa hit.It was recently confirmed that she will be on the new DJ Khaled album, Grateful. It appears she will be on a song alongside Bryson Tiller. They shot the video for that track earlier this week.Check out footage from the “Loyalty” shoot below.#INFO: Le clip #LOYALTY (Kendrick Lamar feat. Rihanna) a été filmé hier.  pic.twitter.com/k32pk8RgGU— RIHANNA NOW (@RihannaNowFR) June 10, 2017

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe, Lamar professed his admiration for Rihanna – “I love everything about her. Her artistry, how she represents women to not only be themselves, but to express themselves the way she expresses herself through music, and how she carries herself. I love everything about her, so I always wanted to work with her.”
Kendrick Lamar is currently on tour across the U.S, in support of his new album, with Travis Scott and D.R.A.M. Aside from DAMN., Kendrick Lamar features on SZA’s debut full length CTRL on “Doves in the Wind,” one of our best tracks of the week. He also jumped on the official remix of Future’s “Mask Off.”

WEBSITE IDEAS

When my website is finished I could advertise it like these as well with a similiar upbeat tune, or a track from the artist.

DISTRIBUTION RESEARCH: YouTube

WHAT I ENDED UP APPLYING:

  • I didn't name the YouTube Channel I created for the band "SuedeVevo", even though they have a distribution deal with Warner Music UK, but "SuedeLands"

YouTube holds a monopoly on video-sharing websites like Dailymotion and Vimeo.

TIMELINE:
2005: Founded
June 2006: YT goes into the first of one of its first marketing and advertising partnerships with NBC
Oct-Nov 2006: Taken over by Google, making it a subsidiary company.
2009: Vevo is founded and goes into partnership with YT
2014: YouTube Red founded
Jan 2015: 360° video introduced

The now defunct major label EMI had its own YouTube channel pre-Vevo, however until last year videos were still uploaded:

Multiple music videos uploaded by Vevo every day:

As is raised in this article, YouTube is still struggling to make financial profit, and are still trying to find ways to achieve this.
How does YouTube make money off videos? And does it make money at all, at least if we are talking about profit rather than just revenue? Once you consider the rising payouts for content, the cost of hosting all those videos and the fact that YouTube gets paid according to how much of an ad is viewed, the conclusion that YouTube is struggling to make a profit. At a Fortune magazine summit in October 2016, YouTube's CEO Susan Wojcicki stated that YouTube is "Still in investment mode," thus it is clear the company is still figuring out how to be profitable. In this article, we’ll look at how YouTube revenue is currently being captured and how this part of the Googleverse is planning on profiting in the future.
Issues include the increase in consumption of videos embedded, so viewing videos on my blog is part of this problem:
The big challenge for YouTube seems to be getting more people to use the site directly. Too many viewers are apparently watching embeds on other sites or dropping in for the odd video without clicking around and browsing further. To combat this, YouTube is trying to build a destination site that people will visit, giving Google more chances to monetize the video’s page.

FINANCIAL PROFIT FOR MUSICIANS:
Rolling Stone giving an examples of musicians making large profits from YouTube clicks.

MY ARTIST

Suede have their own YouTube account, not through Vevo, named "SuedeOfficial":
Next to uploading their videos, they also have detailed discussions about the content of the lyrics of their songs:

Live performances:

It is quite common to release the audio of songs with the album cover in the background, however what is less common as they have released older singles and B-sides and done it with them:

One of their recent album released as audio tracks:

Tracks from all of their 90s albums

Includes my chosen track "Can't Get Enough" with all it's B-sides released at the time

Suede are not the only artist to have done this, for example Adele who has signed with the indie label XL Recordings, has both a Vevo YouTube Channel, but also her own YouTube channel with more content, which is also labelled "the official YouTube Channel of Adele", however the stark contrast in subscription numbers show the monopoly the Vevo channel has:
